Neil Patrick Harris saves the Emmys
Credit Harris for rescuing the Emmys from two years of reality TV hosting "miasma," says Robert Bianco, but credit should also be shared with producer Don Mischer for grouping the awards by genre. "The tone was set from his opening number, a hilarious song salute to the TV season that was as well-written as it was performed," says Bianco. It was an intentionally elaborate shift from last year's infamously deadly start — the reality quintet confessing they had nothing prepared — and it did precisely what it was meant to do. It let the crowd at home and in the theater know they were in the hands of someone who took the job seriously and knew how to do it."
Emmy ratings rebound from last year's record low with 1 million more viewers
It WAS a rerun: This year's Emmys are last year's Emmys!
Is Neil Patrick Harris better than Hugh Jackman? // Show gave a sense of love for TV
Too much facetiousness // Siege mentality: Too many in-jokes! Too self-referential!
Biggest surprises: Kristin Chenoweth, Jon Cryer, Toni Collette, Michael Emerson
Emmys = Geekfest // All the niche shout-outs must've alienaed non-pop culture junkies
Complete List of winners // Jon Cryer's win was long overdue // Dr. Horrible pops up
What were the Emmys thinking airing violent "Family Guy" and obscure "Dr. Horrible"?
Have "30 Rock," "Mad Men" ruined Emmys? // Bad ideas: Obscure bios, John Hodgman
Will Hugh Laurie ever win? // Jeff Probst was right: "THIS is how you host the Emmys"
This year's show felt like the Golden Globes with all its looseness
