January Jones: One of "SNL's" worst-ever hosts
The "Mad Men" star teamed with "SNL" writers to turn in one of the worst episodes in a while. "You could tell from the very first moments she lurched onstage wearing a forced smile and a deer-in-headlights look of mortification that never left and proceeded to make sweet love to the cue cards," says Nathan Rabin. "Everyone on SNL reads cue cards but Jones was especially egregious. She stared at those cue cards so intensely I’m surprised she didn’t burn a hole right through them. Though she excelled in a clever if fairly obvious taped faux-education film about how to throw the perfect incredibly repressed early-sixties Mad Men-style dinner party, Jones pretty much had two modes: stone-faced or giggly."

She loves these people, she doesn't want to see anything happen to her little world. She will protect that to no end."

Shame on Joss Whedon!: He was "greedy" for chasing "Dollhouse" big bucks
Lisa de Moraes argues that "Dollhouse" could've lived if Whedon didn't chase the big money of network TV and settled for cable, where he'd be more successful. "Joss Whedon gets nothing BUT breaks," she says in an online chat. "This show never should have been picked up in the first place. Then it never should have been picked up for a second season. He's the luckiest guy working in TV today. Period. Like I said, he has a very loyal, but small, fanbase and had he not gotten greedy and gone for the Big Broadcast Bucks, this show might have survived and flourished on a cable network. Joss Whedon needs to think more about his fans and less about his wallet. If he did, he would do his work for a cable network which can sustain a show that attracts this sized audience. He did not serve you well. Shame on him."

Rambling "The Prisoner" is neither compelling nor special

One of the problems with the AMC remake is that we've been there, done that, says Tim Goodman. "The original allowed a new generation of writers to tear up convention, American television viewers have seen everything from 'Twin Peaks' to 'Lost,' 'The X-Files' and all kinds of science fiction series up to 'Battlestar Galactica.' The notion that being vague and ominous and weird can be all that it takes to bring viewers on a ride is simply outdated. People have already seen that. They need a payoff. They need answers."

The first several episodes of the show forced a case-of-the-week procedural format on it that didn't really fit. But it got a promotional campaign to rival Barack Obama's general election. It got a second-season order with one of the lowest ratings for any renewed broadcast show ever. And once it found its voice, Fox committed to it and, apparently, let it be the show Whedon envisioned." PLUS: Eliza Dushku calls it "the MOST rewarding experience of my career."

Craig Ferguson has one female writer — his sister — and Jimmy Kimmel has one, too — his girlfriend. Jimmy Fallon, meanwhile, has three. David Letterman's first head writer, his ex-girlfriend Merrill Markoe, thinks she might have an explanation for why late-night has become a boy's club, attributing it to "an odd shift toward more boys’ humor" in the ’90s might have kept some women."
