4 damage-control tips for Leno: Pay Conan's staff, stop saying "fired"
Jay Leno should also stop tussling with David Letterman, advises Joshua Alston. "Schools of piranha attack with less ferocity than with which David Letterman has chewed up his old rival," he says adding: "While the temptation to retaliate is understandable, Jay has to remember that engaging with Dave only reminds people that Conan isn't the first guy whose job he's taken. The only way to float above the fray is to grin and bear the potshots until the whole thing blows over."

"Jersey Shore" has revitalized reality TV
The MTV reality show, argues Jon Caramanica, "restored the vitality to reality television in a way no show has accomplished since 'Queer Eye for the Straight Guy,' and is certainly MTV's greatest cultural phenomenon since 'Jackass.' Its characters have genuine idiosyncrasies. It's endlessly quotable. And with its unwavering commitment to the ethic of partying, it's possibly the last vestige of reality television as it used to be: unself-conscious."

Sissy Spacek joins "Big Love," but she won't be part of the compound

Co-creator Will Scheffer says of her guest stint, which starts Sunday: "To do a guest arc on an ensemble show is very unusual for an actress of her stature, so we knew that we had to offer something substantially exciting. As we got into developing it more with Sissy in mind, we realized that this character was going to have a crucial role at the end of the season that would be a game changer for the family."

"Caprica" is a pale shadow of "Battlestar Galactica"
The Syfy prequel, says Heather Havrilesky, "suffers from the awkward starting block of presenting 'the burgeoning technology of artificial intelligence and robotics that will eventually lead to the creation of the Cylons,' but it's also charged with exploring the same looming questions that 'Battlestar' did over the course of its run. This means that, not only does every plot point of 'Caprica' feel like a big, obvious explanation for the far more compelling original … but the whole thing is stuffed with the worst sorts of flashy but skin-deep characters.

"Spartacus" is deliciously, marvelously bad

"I was helpless in its grip," Hank Stuever says of the Starz series premiering tonight. "It's a long way from Kubrick, but what isn't? … It's also just about the grimiest, nastiest, bloodiest thing you could hope to find on TV on a Friday night. Limbs fly. Blood splatters everywhere. One warrior rips off the face of another and wears it as a mask to his next fight. There's lots of soft-core love scenes: Spartacus and his bride frolic around like the original "Joy of Sex" cartoon drawings. Lucretia and Batiatus have their slaves serve as marital aides. And you can't help but laugh at the dialogue."
