Letterman unleashes his Leno impersonation, calls Conan "our old friend"
Dave devoted a few minutes Monday talking about the Leno debacle, doing his Leno impersonation and proposing that perhaps Conan and Leno should both air at 11:35, and alternate segments. Dave also called Conan "our old friend," and Jimmy Fallon "poor Jimmy Fallon." He also kept bringing up Carson Daly, who he said "is really screwed, but you know, nobody seems to care." Craig Ferguson slams "the atrocious management at a once great network"

NBC believes it didn't breach Conan's contract — could he be kept off air?
The NY Times is reporting that there will unlikely be a prolonged contract dispute if Conan decides to leave for Fox, but they won't want to pay the $45 million penalty and they could try keeping him from starting a Fox show for a year. The Times reports: "The contract, NBC is arguing, guaranteed Mr. O’Brien would be installed as host of “The Tonight Show” — and unlike many other deals for late-night stars, Mr. O’Brien’s contract contains no specific language about the time period the show would occupy, NBC executives said."

Letterman jokes about the Leno/Conan fiasco
"Well, ladies and gentlemen, once again, I did not get 'The Tonight Show,'" Dave said during Monday's monologue, according to a CBS transcript. “That’s not all, listen to this:  today, NBC announced that they are bringing back Johnny Carson and they’re putting him on at 10 p.m." Letterman added that "the problem is my mother is now all confused."

Simon Cowell confirms he's leaving "Idol" after this season for "The X Factor"
This will be Simon's final season on "American Idol," the "Idol" star just announced. As widely reported, Simon will be moving on to his own show, "The X Factor" on Fox, starting in fall 2011. He'll serve as executive producer and judge. "There's been a lot of speculation, partly because we didn't have an agreement," said Simon. "We reached an agreement formally at about half past 11 this morning," Simon said it was impossible to juggle both shows. "I've had the best eight or nine years doing this job. It's been fantastic," added Cowell, who signed the contract for his new show before TV critics. PLUS: Will Paula Abdul join Simon on "X Factor"? Says Simon: "Whatever happens, I will be working with her in some capacity, because I like her."

Report: Conan ready to leave NBC — he's already spoken to Fox
The Wall Street Journal, a Fox corporate sibling, reports that the network has "had early talks with Mr. O'Brien, according to people familiar with the matter." Meanwhile, the New York Post, another Fox corporate sibling, says that Conan is "ready to fly the coop." "This level of sh- – -iness was not expected," a source tells the paper. "He's done a great job for NBC. He moved his entire staff, he moved his family to LA. And five months later, they repay him like this?" PLUS: Jimmy Fallon doesn't care where he ends up, as long as he has a late-night show.

Confronted by a TMZ camera last night, Leno ducked all questions about the NBC shakeup.

NBC confirms Jay Leno is moving to 11:35 — Peacock still wants Conan
"The Jay Leno Show" will end its 10 o'clock run on Feb. 12 and move to 11:35 in a 30-minute format, NBC confirmed today. "It has been performing at acceptable levels for networks, but it did not meet all the affiliate needs," NBC's Jeff Gaspin told critics this morning. Leno "just didn’t meet the needs of our affiliates," Gaspin explained, adding: "I’d have liked nothing more than to give this a 52-week try." He also pointed out that Leno was actually making money for the network. Gaspin said he expects an announcement for NBC's new late-night line-up to be announced by the time the Olympics start in one month. PLUS: Conan will still host a show called "The Tonight Show" if he were to stay, and NBC is hopeful he'll stick with the Peacock. "What was really important to Conan was having the franchise of 'The Tonight Show,'" explained Gaspin. "I came up with this compromise." NBC is also trying to get Jimmy Fallon to agree to the new deal.


By not working, Conan could make as much as $80 million from NBC

But if he were to move to another network, NBC's salary obligation would go down depending on his new talk show deal.

"What do you think is going to happen to my show?" asked The Forgotten NBC "Last Call" host, who once worked as Kimmel's intern at a Palm Springs radio station. He then asked, "Can I have your show?" Kimmel spent a few minutes talking about NBC's late-night debacle, bringing out a pumpkin pie to explain it all.


Fox crunching numbers to see if Conan (and his "soft" ratings) are worth it

There have been "approaches" by other networks over the past two days, according to the Wall Street Journal, but it appears Fox is most serious about pursuing Conan O'Brien. Fox's interest in Conan, however, hasn't turned serious due to his contract with NBC. As the Journal reports, "Among Fox's concerns are the shrinking profits of late night as competition grows, and Mr. O'Brien's soft ratings, the people said. The network could also have trouble persuading local Fox TV stations to give up shows they have already purchased to fill their late-night hours." "Gumby" creator Art Clokey dies at 89
Clokey, who also was one of the voices of Gumby, died Friday morning at his home near San Luis Obispo, California. Clokey created Gumby in the early '50s, but the clay character didn't make its debut until 1956 on the "Howdy Doody" show. As the San Luis Obispo Tribune notes, Gumby's appearance was inspired by Clokey's dad, who died in a car crash when he was just 9 years old.

Fox expresses interest in Conan
"We love Conan," one anonymous Fox exec tells the New York  Times. Another Fox employee added: "We’ve always been interested in late night and we’re always looking to bring great new talent to Fox. While Conan would be a great fit for Fox, he’s still under contract with NBC, so we’ll just see how all of this plays out." PLUS: Conan now has to deal with a $45 million dilemma.

Obama's favorite "Mad Men" character is Peggy Olson

"It turns out that Obama really liked Peggy Olson. She reminded him of his grandmother, who had to work her way up in the same kind of man's world."
