Paula who? Ellen DeGeneres makes her mark on "Idol"
On her first day on the job, Ellen "brought comedy, confidence and clear-cut sobriety, says Mark A. Perigard. "Her criticisms were lucid and tinged with humor. She advised one contestant, 'Don’t frighten your audience. Sexy and scary, it’s a fine line.'" Still, it must be pointed out that last night's episode was taped. And her true test will come on the live shows in a few weeks.
With Ellen, ratings go up // "Eh"!: America doesn't want to see Ellen be mean
Ellen said nothing of consequence, seamlessly fitting in with meaningless panel
Ellen was direct and decisive, a sharp contrast to the audition rounds
She was vocal, funny, opinionated and willing to mess around
Ellen doesn't want Howard Stern // "The View": Stern isn't relevant anymore
At least Ellen injected some much-needed color to bland episode
Paula Abdul's presence was felt with contestant's "Straight Up" homage
