The villain segments of last night's two-hour premiere were far more compelling than the hero segments, says James Poniewozik. But that could change, he says, as "some of the heroes are going to begin to act anti-heroic, making alliances and going cloak-and-dagger. In fact, the whole classification of heroes and villains on this show is tricky … Maybe being a villain on Survivor simply means not being boring. And as things go on, I suspect we'll start to see what a fine line there is between the angels and the fallen angels."

The first two "Survivor" all-star seasons didn't work for various reasons. But with nearly half the cast of "Heroes vs. Villains" competing on their third "Survivor," there's a good chance that this season could be better than ever. As Alan Sepinwall points out, "The first all-star season was tainted because several players … acted like they didn’t want to be there, while others took their prior real-world relationships with the competition too seriously within the confines of the game. And the hybrid "Fans vs. Favorites" season from a few years ago did a terrible job at casting the alleged 'fans,' who were easily routed by the previously-unimpressive likes of Parvati."
The "30 Rock" star was taken to the hospital early this morning after his 14-year-old daughter, Ireland, called 911, claiming that he was "unresponsive" after threatening to take pills amid an argument. "This was a misunderstanding on one person's part," said Baldwin's rep. "Alec was quickly released from the hospital he's completely fine and will be at work today."
ABC and the OWN tried to steal Ellen DeGeneres away from NBC, but Ellen decided to renew her contract through the 2013-14 season. NBC will pay between $250,000 and $300,000 per week for her show, according to the L.A. Times, which points out that now ABC has one less option for replacing Oprah when she leaves syndication next year.

On her first day on the job, Ellen "brought comedy, confidence and clear-cut sobriety, says Mark A. Perigard. "Her criticisms were lucid and tinged with humor. And her true test will come on the live shows in a few weeks.
Garry Marshall said a film based on the TV show is in the works, telling "Extra": "We're gonna work on that. My sister Penny and Cindy are gonna have a guest cameo. They're gonna walk "schlemiel, schlemazel" — or they're gonna get tired in the middle and sit down." Would Garner be willing to do it? "Are you kidding? We're dying to do it!" she says.
