A Steve Carell-less "Office" might be what the show desperately needs
"The Office" has become too complacent, especially when it comes to risk-taking, says James Poniewozik. "Knowing that it had one season to finish Michael Scott's run on the show might free 'The Office' to start taking risks again, to be a show with real stakes where things really change, and it would give Carell the sendoff he deserves," he writes.

Why Siobhan was eliminated from "Idol"
It all has to do with the requirements of marketing, says Katherine Meizel. "Siobhan did not want to put her voice in a box," she says. "She was a 'funny little thing.' She was quirky. She was spunky and all other manner of adjectives that end affectionately in 'y.' (Plus, she had style, she had flair, she was there!) But unless one of them is 'GaGa,' adjectives are not enough to sell millions of albums these days. Boxes, though, get the job done. So with one last glorious echo of the Barbra-ic YAWP she came in with, Siobhan has left us alone to 'Think!' on what we have wrought."

New TV trend: Cool parents who are pals with their teenagers

According to the Wall Street Journal, "This less-defiant generation is influencing plots, changing what types of shows get made and prompting networks like MTV that have long specialized in youthful rebellion to rethink their approach. The new, more-sanguine shows still broach racy topics like sex, drug use and teen pregnancy, but they appease parents by always presenting consequences. Parents typically have prominent roles and just as many tawdry story lines as the teens—and look almost like older siblings."

The "Idols" didn't seem to get Shania Twain

Twain was the most enjoyable theme so far, says Ann Powers, but the "Idol" stars didn't milk the songs that made Twain so important: "the jaunty self-confidence that helped this Canadian resort lounge singer and her rocker mate invade Nashville and open up country for a new generation." "Glee" returns to its roots, letting the story triumph over the music
Of last night's episode, James Poniewozik writes: "The thing about Glee is that its audience is a confederation of people who like the show for sometimes entirely different reasons: for the songs, for the darker small-town stories, for Sue Sylvester's zingers, for the don't-stop-believin' uplift, for the realistic drama, for the heightened melodrama. And, of course, there are people who like all of the above. Often, Glee zigs back and forth among these constituencies: a light episode here, a dramatic episode here, a music-heavy episode there. My ideal Glee would integrate those aspects into each episode under one big roof."

Will "Happy Town" be the latest ABC series too reliant on red herrings?
"Given ABC's recent approach to series such as this," says Troy Patterson, "it is perfectly natural to be wary that 'Happy Town' will turn into a five-pound bucket of red herrings. Treading the line between artful confusion and total nonsense has been ABC's thing in recent years. Consider the triple-agent escapades of later seasons of Alias, the stumbling time trips of 'Day Break' and 'FlashForward,' and whatever the hell it is that happens on Lost. Has the network learned from its mistakes? Will Happy Town realize its potential? It's a mystery to me."

Kurt is "Glee's" breakout star, and Barbra Streisand is the show's patron saint
Kurt, says Emily Nussbaum, "isn’t a sweet victim or a sassy sidekick: He’s a moral mixture, seizing center stage. Sometimes the role evokes the stereotypical evil queen, but more often it suggests early Barbra Streisand, whose classic medley of 'House' with 'One Less Bell to Answer' is referenced in (tonight's) episode. For all 'Glee’s' hip-hop references, Barbra is pretty much the show’s patron saint: the original homely underdog seducer, the outsider who was willing to violate the values of mere prettiness for a different kind of power."
