Claim: Texting, instruments created "Idol's" "cute boy dynasty"
Would Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood win "American Idol" nowadays? Perhaps not: "If three times makes a pattern," says Richard Rushfield, "'Idol' then has set in to what seems a hardened law that the winners will be exclusively low-key, cute, white, male rockers, as seen in the last winners David Cook, Kris Allen and now, Lee DeWyze." Rushfield points out that the "cute boy dynasty" started in 2007, when "Idol" first allowed singers to use instruments. "Since the rules were changed to allow instruments, the contest has been dominated by musicians, much more out of the rocker or singer/songwriter tradition, then pure songbirds," he notes. Also around 2007, says Rushfield, young people texting became widespread, which has resulted in them becoming a powerful voting block.
