Claim: Texting, instruments created "Idol's" "cute boy dynasty"
Would Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood win "American Idol" nowadays? Perhaps not: "If three times makes a pattern," says Richard Rushfield, "'Idol' then has set in to what seems a hardened law that the winners will be exclusively low-key, cute, white, male rockers, as seen in the last winners David Cook, Kris Allen and now, Lee DeWyze." Rushfield points out that the "cute boy dynasty" started in 2007, when "Idol" first allowed singers to use instruments. "Since the rules were changed to allow instruments, the contest has been dominated by musicians, much more out of the rocker or singer/songwriter tradition, then pure songbirds," he notes. Also around 2007, says Rushfield, young people texting became widespread, which has resulted in them becoming a powerful voting block.

Did Ellen steal buzz away from "Idol" with Greyson Chance signing?

The 12-year-old YouTube sensation's signing to Ellen's record label apparently took some of the spotlight away from "Idol," at least on Twitter. As Simon Dumenco notes, "what we have here is a show whose iconic chief judge, Simon Cowell, just departed, and whose newest judge, Ellen DeGeneres, seemed to be way more interested, during finale week, in cultivating her own star-making powers, which have nothing to do with 'Idol.'"

"Blue Bloods" creators Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green did indeed work as executive producers on "The Sopranos," as touted by the CBS promos. Lee: "Idol's" 3rd "Super-Safe Kinda Beige Rocker Boy winner" in a row
"Weirdly," says Lisa de Moraes, "tweener girls and middle-aged women seem to love to vote for these super-safe guys — they just don't buy their albums or download their tunes much." The part-time paint salesman, she notes, "became the franchise's third consecutive Super-Safe Kinda Beige Rocker Boy winner. DeWyze follows the super-safe Kris Allen who, similarly, in 2009 beat the spectacularly talented but ultra-polarizing guy-linered Adam Lambert, and 2008's super-safe David Cook, who beat out the spectacularly talented but creepily dad-dominated David Archuleta."
