Damon Lindelof on "Lost's" direction: "We're not being obnoxious or cocky"
"We knew it would be an episode that would be divisive," says Lindelof. "We've been talking since the beginning of the season about the idea that the great thing of doing a show on your own terms is you have no excuses, but it's also slightly terrifying that if you're a mystery show, there will inevitably be episodes that answer mysteries. That has the potential to frighten, terrify, make people hate. This was going to be the season where we said, 'Whatever your theory was, our presentation of the endgame of the show may disprove your theory, so we're sorry if you don't like the fact that you don't get the Man in Black's name, but you don't get it.' Maybe the "Idol" Final 4 don't really want to win
So thinks Ann Powers, who was underwhelmed by this week's performance show: "2010's Final Four," she says, "seemed to be aiming beyond — or let's say below — the confines of this crucial week's theme. Their song choices were haphazard, idiosyncratic, even selfish. Two pop songs from films that many love to hate (I know, 'Caddyshack' is a cult classic), one favorite that nonetheless seemed like a desperate ploy, and one song so effectively parodied by Jack Black in 2007 that it should be eternally retired from the show: It was definitely a night to yell at the screen and Tweet, on repeat, 'WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?'"

Why this week's "Lost" was a bad idea

"For me," says James Poniewozik, "at this point, an entire episode of 'Across the Sea' seemed unnecessary—better dealt with in the context of the action and dialogue, even at the risk of possible ticking off some fans who really had to know who Adam and Eve were and where that wheel came from. I'll go farther, in fact, and say that the episode is an argument for leaving some questions unanswered, answering them cryptically, leaving them shrouded in mystery. Sometimes you've just got to say "A wizard did it" and leave it at that."
