The FX series busts so many sitcom taboos that it's quite refreshing, says Heather Havrilesky. "Whether or not 'Louie' gains the popularity of a far less original show like 'Entourage,' its jumbled narrative structure and absurdist flights of fancy capture something essential about the alienation of modern life," she says. "Which is nice, because most of us are too old to be amused by empty jokes and simple narrative arcs where the guy gets the girl and everything turns out just fine in the end."
Peter Tolan is hoping that Tommy Gavin will find redemption once the series ends next year. "I don’t think you want to do a television series for this many years and not leave an audience that’s been along for the journey with some sort of positive message," he says. "So, this year, definitely, definitely, and quite soon, Tommy will find his way back and find his way into figuring out what his priorities are in life and what’s important to him."
What's striking about the much-derided HBO series, says Matt Zoller Seitz, is its fascination with class, and how the gang's working-class roots have them navigate wealth differently. "It's about a bunch of street-corner yahoos elbowing their way into the world's sleaziest country club," he says. "The lead characters' blue-collar background gives them license to take big risks."
