Was Ellen pushed out of "Idol"?
Ellen DeGeneres, Fox and "American Idol" producers insist leaving was Ellen's decision, yet just last week her reps told The Hollywood Reporter she was willing to return. And according to the Washington Post reports, "Sources say the suits behind the scene wanted her gone. But, on Thursday, they handed her the knife, issuing a statement saying DeGeneres 'has decided to bow out from her role as a judge on 'American Idol' next season' which included a quote from Ellen in which she said that a couple of month ago she told Fox and the show's producers she didn't think she was "the right fit" for the show."

"Ellen sounded great in her first Hollywood episodes," says Alan Sepinwall, "but once the live shows began – and her nervousness couldn't be hid by editing – it became clear quickly that she wasn't going to become the new 'Idol' star and enable the show to survive Simon Cowell's departure." With her gone, he say, it's "more likely" now that Lythgoe will become Simon's replacement.

If producers get budget approval, it will happen: "We want to do this Cannonball Run/Amazing Race-style episode where our characters are all racing through the city," says co-creator Craig Thomas. "It would look nothing like the show normally does. It would be more like a crazy little movie. It would be the most fun thing to do."
