"The Flintstones" at 50: How the Bedrock gang broke TV ground

Aimed at adults, "The Flintstones" debuted 50 years ago today with Hanna Barbera's development of "limited animation," which reduced costs while allowing the cartoon makers to focus on character and dialogue. "This was pretty risky, to put on a prime-time animated series not aimed for children," says USC TV historian Jon Burlingame. "ABC was the risk-taking network at the time because they were routinely buried in the bottom of the ratings. And Hanna-Barbera hit a home run. It was clever, original and very funny."

"Law & Order: Los Angeles" is too bland for a show about L.A.
The first episode isn't distinctive enough, says Randee Dawn, who says "hard not to watch 'LO:LA' without yearning for the very things that made this franchise so distinctive: intelligent stories, raw camerawork and a feeling of verisimilitude that slashed through the ho-hum murder-of-the-week shows. Two decades on, for this franchise to stand out, it still should be doing some slashing and burning — and a lot less spewing of lines like: 'Mom shoots a burglar, daughter holds a press conference. I love L.A.' The last thing this series wants to do is blend in — and thus far, it's no standout."
Attempts to "look L.A." makes "LOLA" seem anti-septic and not gritty at all
