"Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear": Awkward, passionate, moving
Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, says James Poniewozik, "put together a very American show on the National Mall today with the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, in front of a crowd of [insert estimate that flatters your worldview here] people. It was a mishmash, and sometimes felt too long. (The first hour or so, with a Roots / John Legend jam leading into the Mythbusters[?!], seemed like stalling for time.) It was sometimes flat, awkwardly paced and tentative in making its arguments. But in the end, as Jon Stewart closed the rally out with a funny but sincere speech, it was also passionate, pointed and—I say this without air quotes—honestly moving.
215,000 showed up // It was an "assiduously shambling affair" for the crowd, not TV
What a  bore! // Stewart was aggressively non-partisan — with a political message

"The Walking Dead" is engaging to watch, even with the unappealing zombies
There's absolutely nothing alluring about the AMC drama's zombies, says Matthew Gilbert. "As supernatural metaphor, they’re the lowest of the low — duller, even, than trolls," he says. But even with the zombies, "The Walking Dead"," he says, "is a promising human story built over a sea of grunting corpses. It’s a scare-fest at points — who’s turning that doorknob?! — and it’s definitely extremely bloody, as zombie guts splatter all over the place like chunky borscht. The 90-minute premiere is a gory Halloween horror event, for sure. But the show, as it begins to unfold more fully next week, takes full advantage of serial TV’s ability to intimately explore interpersonal character dramas."

Stewart/Colbert can't stop the perception that the rally is political

Jon Stewart has repeated over and over that "The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear" isn't a political event. But try telling that to the hundreds of thousands expected at tomorrow's rally. "This event, while originally intended for jest, could possibly become a 'turning point' … in our nation's history for having immense impact on how political discourse is engaged in the future," says Chicago writer Nanci Ponne. "You have created a political movement, intended or not."
