But as Rich Heldenfels notes, it took a summer run in 1991 for "90210" to establish itself as a breakthrough hit after a ratings-challenged 1st season. Says Heldenfels: "It had begun as an often serious exploration of issues such as sex and alcoholism in the lives of its young characters; the earliest episodes all seemed to involve a girl with a problem. Such issues remained part of the show's fabric, and part of the show's appeal rested on its belief that its audience wanted to be taken seriously."
