"Conan" on TBS wasn't a reinvention — it was a restoration
The main problem with Conan O'Brien on TBS, says James Poniewozik is that it harkens back too much to  his "Late Night" past. But there were glimmers of hope, he says, pointing out that Conan evolved as a performer in the opening and closing of the show. "What was exciting about Conan's 'Tonight Show,'even or especially during those times when he was struggling to get the balance of daring humor with a broad platform, was the notion that this comic artist was getting the chance to do something new, with a new set of tools," he says. "Conan didn't need to reinvent the wheel (nor does he now): he was just showing us he had this new, awesome wheel, and he couldn't wait to show us how fast it was. I want to see that excitement on Conan—and to be fair, there were flashes of it."

Most burning "Conan" question: Will he keep the beard?
"Will the beard be back, and if so, how long will it stay?" asks pro-beard James Poniewozik. "I've been of the opinion that Conan simply needs to keep the beard now, for the time being," he argues. "For starters, it looks good on him. But it's also a symbol, not just of his history post-Tonight Show, or his renegade image—he also sported a beard in support of his writers during the writers' strike a few years back—but a statement that this is not just Tonight Show 2.0."
