FX boss: Subtlety, not marketing, may have doomed "Terriers"
FX president John Landgraf insisted that his studies show that the Shawn Ryan drama was marketed correctly. But he notes that viewers just didn't take to "Terriers" perhaps because of its subtlety. "I'm not sure subtly is something the American public is buying in droves today," he told TV critics in a rare post-cancelation conference call. "Just look at 'Jersey Shore,' 'The Kardashians,' 'The Walking Dead,' 'Sons of Anarchy' to what is selling in the political space, I wouldn't say subtly and nuance is considered the most successful popular content in America today." Why Jimmy Kimmel is the new Johnny Carson — the king of late-night
According to Heather Havrilesky, Kimmel has late-night's best monologue — and swagger, imagination and the quick wit to separate himself from other hosts. As she notes, "When you flip from Conan to Leno to Letterman, or stay up for Carson Daly or Fallon or Ferguson, even though you might appreciate Ferguson's bizarro self-deprecating digressions or Fallon's raw enthusiasm, Kimmel is the only host who will make you laugh out loud more than a few times per episode. He's got the sharpest monologue, the most interesting digressions and skits, and the best interviewing skills." PLUS: "Dancing" boosts Kimmel's ratings.
