FX boss: Subtlety, not marketing, may have doomed "Terriers"
FX president John Landgraf insisted that his studies show that the Shawn Ryan drama was marketed correctly. But he notes that viewers just didn't take to "Terriers" perhaps because of its subtlety. "I'm not sure subtly is something the American public is buying in droves today," he told TV critics in a rare post-cancelation conference call. "Just look at 'Jersey Shore,' 'The Kardashians,' 'The Walking Dead,' 'Sons of Anarchy' to what is selling in the political space, I wouldn't say subtly and nuance is considered the most successful popular content in America today." PLUS: "It's like putting a dog down," says creator Ted Grffin. Exec producer Tim Minear adds that "this was the most painful and the most painless all at the same time."

Ed O'Neill: Jane Lynch didn't deserve her Emmy — his TV wife did

Sue Sylvester is "just a one-note character," says the "Modern Family" star, adding that his TV wife, Sofia Vergara, was much more deserving. "I don’t think people realize how hilarious she is. She’s so sharp with her wit, it’s amazing," he says. PLUS: Sofia Vergara may become the new face of Kmart.

Why Jimmy Kimmel is the new Johnny Carson — the king of late-night

According to Heather Havrilesky, Kimmel has late-night's best monologue — and swagger, imagination and the quick wit to separate himself from other hosts. As she notes, "When you flip from Conan to Leno to Letterman, or stay up for Carson Daly or Fallon or Ferguson, even though you might appreciate Ferguson's bizarro self-deprecating digressions or Fallon's raw enthusiasm, Kimmel is the only host who will make you laugh out loud more than a few times per episode. He's got the sharpest monologue, the most interesting digressions and skits, and the best interviewing skills." PLUS: "Dancing" boosts Kimmel's ratings.

"Little People, Big World" ends with the Roloffs completing their "mission"

"It was our lot in life and we accepted it as our mission," says Matt Roloff, who notes that his wife is sad to say goodbye to the TLC series.

"The Walking Dead" creator glad season finale diverged from the comic book
On revealing what caused the zombie outbreak, Robert Kirkman says: "I'm certainly not afraid of giving people answers, and I don't think it ruins anything or takes anything away by giving some people some tidbits … I wouldn't want to go too much past (what 'TS-19' revealed), as far as getting into an actual cause, or anything like that. But I think that where it went was a good tease. And it also brought up more questions than answers. I think that's always a good thing." PLUS: Kirkman said "go for it" when it came to the explosion.
Writing staff shakeup is a good idea: There was too much inconsistency this season
6 lessons from the finale // Merle will return // What would Daryl do?
Andrew Lincoln: "Walking Dead' worked "because we had a deferral of fear"
What happens next? // "Walking Dead" is No. 1 among pirated TV shows
6 million watched: "Walking Dead" becomes the No. 1 drama in basic-cable history

"Boardwalk Empire" ends 1st season with TV's best performances of the year

Steve Buscemi, Kelly MacDonald and Michael Pitt deserve to be honored beyond the "devalued" Emmys, says Ginia Bellafante. She adds: "'Boardwalk Empire' is meditation on compromise — the sins we can live with and the sins we can't, as Nucky aptly put it. Nucky can clearly live with “Godfather”-style killings, racketeering and power mongering of a kind beholden to no ethical code, but he cannot live with his tragic, intimate betrayals."
What a disappointment: Too much stilted talk, too much soliloquizing
A fantastic end // Like a prologue to Season 2 // A punch-in-the-gut finale
"Boardwalk" transcended its initial Scorsese-influenced violence and cynicism
Meet Deacon Cuffy, a sociology prof in real life // Ending was breathtaking

"Men of a Certain Age" returns strong — and unlike anything else on TV

"The plots are really secondary to the show’s winning, easy-going style and its bittersweet tone," says Matthew Gilbert. "This isn't John Cassavetes, but there’s something of the director's spaciously paced, slightly improvised technique about the way the men on the show interact as they take their regular hikes and breakfast at the diner. Both their banter and their confrontations have a loose, natural quality."
Season 2 is even better // Why do more women than men watch "Men"?
Ray Romano: I was overruled when I thought a line was too Ray Barone-like
Romano is Ray Barone — for 3 minutes // "Men's" lesson: Cool is overrated
Andre Braugher shed 30 to 35 pounds this season, at his wife's insistence
Scott Bakula: Don't expect a Season 9 // Bakula now playing a car dealer

A&E's "The Hasselhoffs is in denial about The Hoff's drinking problem

"This reality show isn’t about a reformed alcoholic struggling to stay sober," says Alessandra Stanley, "it's another goofy Kardashian-ish showcase for an unreformed show-business addict who is willing to put everything, including his two daughters, on display. The blithe way Mr. Hasselhoff finesses his image problem might have been a problem in the past, but nowadays jokes about serious drinking aren’t taboo, they are de rigueur."

I think in one sense I admire AMC for the courage of their convictions and the fact that they’re not pulling any punches in regards to the brutality of it. If we didn’t have that we wouldn’t have the extremes of the emotional content that the characters go through."

You think 'It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia' and even the animated 'Archer.' Series on FX have balls, no question about it.
