Erin Andrews: I've wanted to become "The Bachelorette," with bachelor nerds
The ESPN star is not going to do it, but for a brief moment she wanted to, asking her publicist, "can you just get me on this thing or what?" "I had it all planned out," she says. Gospel choirs? Fog?: Is "Idol" going overboard in its production values?
Producers have turned the production values up a bit too soon this year, which is affecting our perception of the "Idols," complains Ellen Gray. "I appreciate what the addition of uber-mentor Jimmy Iovine might mean to producing a successful recording artist from this final group," she says, "but I hope he and producers appreciate how much of the "Idol" experience is about letting viewers feel, at least, as if they're discovering someone. Which means turning up the heat (or the fog) slowly." PLUS: Auto-tune banned, and handicapping the Top 12.

Could Netflix original shows change the way TV is made?
Unlike cable and broadcast networks, Netflix won't have the burden of creating a complete schedule and its own brand of programming. As James Poniewozik notes, "Once entities like Netflix can acquire programs—without having to be "programmers"—that dynamic could melt away. You no longer have to fit a show to a channel, you just have to fit it to an audience." PLUS: Is this a ruse to gain leverage against TV and movie companies?
In defense of Gilbert Gottfried
His tsunami jokes were a legitimate response to tragedy, says Mary Elizabeth Williams. "Gottfried's instincts were a comic's: to look at catastrophe and try to attack it with the main weapon in his arsenal. In the worst moments of life, humor can be a potent force for healing (think of The Onion's brilliant post-9/11 coverage) — or salt in a still bleeding wound."
