Obama roasts a sitting Donald Trump and his "Celebrity Apprentice"
The Donald was in attendance at tonight's White House Correspondents' Dinner when the president took aim at Trump's "Apprentice" firing skills. Obama was particularly impressed by the way Trump fired Gary Busey. "These are the kind of decisions that would keep me up at night," said Obama. The speech was reportedly co-written by the co-creator of "Chappelle's Show." PLUS: "SNL's" Seth Meyers also skewered Trump at the annual gathering.

"First, structured as a series of goodbyes, it give him a moment with each of the significant characters on The Office, in a plausible way. But it also gave us glimpses of each stage of Michael as we've known him, the good and the bad. There is still the hilariously inappropriate Michael: the one, for instance, who gives Kevin a caricature of him as a pig eating pizzas in the belief that he's giving the 'gift' of motivation, or who still can't hide his contempt for Toby. But there's also the Michael who has the emotional insight to give Erin fatherly advice about her romantic dilemma, and to surprise Phyllis by making a sweet rather than offensive remark about her having been cute in high school."
The entire "Office" staff will be in mourning tonight, something that would've been unheard of when the show debuted in 2005 with a Michael Scott who was very much scorned like the Ricky Gervais character he copied. But in between Seasons 1 and 2, producers realized that they had to tailor the boss for Steve Carell, making Michael his own man. "It's kind of incredible to think on that transformation, and how gradually and mostly naturally the show pulled it off," says Alan Sepinwall, who notes the differences between Gervais' David Brent and Scott.
Colfer performing on "Glee" is just a marvel to see, says Matt Zoller Seitz. "Between Colfer's talent and his character's iconic backstory," he says, "I wouldn't be surprised if people one day look back on this actor-singer as one of the great aspirational figures in American pop culture, as important in his own way as Streisand, Sidney Poitier, or Selena. Colfer doesn't just sing and act. He stands for something."

Because, as Ann Powers points out, "'Idol' can't turn out a top woman not because its voting constituency is boy crazy, but because its own musical framework is sadly irrelevant when it comes to what female pop stars do in the 21st century." For instance a 21st century female singer must know how to dance, like J.Lo, or tell a story, like Taylor Swift. "Today's post-divas also explore multiple identities through performance," she says, adding: "'Idol' doesn't really give its hopefuls a chance to try any of this."
It's an interesting experiment, says Tom Breihan, but "the video montages are just bad … That, combined with the amateur-hour theme music ('This is the voice!'), the bad computer graphics, the weird pre-taped atmosphere, and Carson Daly's general presence combine to make the show feel just slightly off, like it's Canadian or something. 'American Idol' has had years to develop a rhythm, and 'The Voice' has a long way to go."
