Whitney Cummings has trouble playing "Whitney" on her NBC sitcom
The trouble with "Whitney" that it's hard to separate Cummings the standup comic who's recycling her act from Whitney the photographer and sitcom character. As Robert Bianco notes, "The main character is too loud, too dominant and far too central; the lines all sound as if they were written to be delivered by a performer rather than spoken in conversation; and the supporting characters are ciphers who exist merely to reflect or foil the star."
"Whitney" may be "the most unself-awarely retro-sexist show on television"
"Whitney" doesn't fit in on NBC Thursdays with its stale sitcom cliches
Whitney is writing for herself as a standup, not "Whitney"
Seems like NBC hasn't taken the reins off Cummings
How bad is the "Whitney" ad campaign? // Is Cummings "hoarding" shows?

"Charlie's Angels" seems like it's embarrassed to be an "Angels" remake

The ABC reboot, says Todd VanDerWerff, "commits halfheartedly to the idea of being a remake of 'Charlie's Angels.' The actors all seem mildly embarrassed to be there. The writers keep tossing in cheeky dialogue that’s meant to be amusing but is, instead, delivered somewhat dryly and without wit. At all times, there's an air of, 'God, isn't this terrible? But aren't you having fun watching it?' Of course we aren’t! If you know you’re doing something bad, it takes all the fun out of it for us."
Problem is producers are actually taking the "Angels" concept deathly seriously
Which is worse, the terrible acting or the awful writing?
What "Charlie's Angels" learned from "Smallville"
"Angels" looks good, but the writing is comically bad
"Angels" is breezy, campy, fast-paced and fun
Ranking the Top 12 "Angels" of all time

"Prime Suspect" is more like "The Closer" than its British inspiration

That's not exactly a bad thing, says Matthew Gilbert, because it allows Maria Bellow to make the Helen Mirren part her own. "The show doesn't reach the heights of the British original," he says, "which doubled as a dark character study and an anatomy of criminal intent. To do that, the 'Prime Suspect' remake would probably need to be on cable. But it is a solid weekly procedural, with a bevy of strong performers in addition to Bello."
Bello has created her own strong, stand-alone character
Compared to UK original, "Prime Suspect" feels 20 years behind the times
Bello sometimes has an "obnoxious edge" not seen before in female police characters
NBC hires 100 actresses dressed as Maria Bello for "Prime Suspect' flash mob
Maria Bello: "I love that about our show, that it has a real sense of humor"

"Person of Interest" is mostly dull, with hints of potential

Tonight's first episode, says James Poniewozik, "is mostly a dull bad-guy chase with an uninteresting protagonist. It also has hints–just hints–of a fascinating show about the implications of technology and the limits of knowledge. But I don't know if it really wants to, or will be allowed to, become that more interesting show."
The problem is that Jim Caviezel seems barely awake
It's a silly hour of TV that doesn't realize how silly it is
It's a saggy, numbed-out crime drama
It set a cinematic tone that recalls "The Dark Knight," and the "Bourne" movies
Balances action and suspense without bogging down
The pleasures are the leads, but you'll want to suspend disbelief
"Person of Interest" creator has always been interested in Big Brother
Michael Emerson likes the way the "two dynamics rub up against each other"
Jim Caviezel spent a lot of time researching with Special Forces operatives

"The X Factor" is more self-consciously a TV show than "Idol"
Both shows are essentially the same, with the exception of the judges and the wider participant base. "Not only has Paula Abdul taken whatever steps were necessary to appear fit and consistently sensible," says Mary McNamara, "the addition of music producer L.A. Reid brings a discerning ear and gravitas to the table that balances Cowell much more evenly than Randy Jackson ever did. This means, alas, that early on we are treated to a “he says yes, I say no” montage and mini-interview with Cowell saying, 'I've met my match,' after which the two men do nothing but agree."

"Revenge" a delicious drama about getting even

The ABC soap, says Glenn Garvin, "is clearly the result of a chance encounter between producer Mike Kelley and Alexandre Dumas' 1844 novel The Count of Monte Cristo. You know, the one you were supposed to read in freshman English before a classmate clued you in to the wondrous secret of Cliffs Notes: A guy falsely sent to prison breaks out and spends the rest of his life plotting hideous revenge on the people who framed him. It's safe to say that Dumas’ name, for most Americans, does not strongly associate with the words scintillating or compelling or (especially) hot chicks. But 'Revenge' has all that and more."

Without Charlie Sheen, "Two and a Half Men" is as good as ever
Call it "New and a Half Men," says Robert Bianco. "Change is always hard, but in this case change was both unavoidable and for the best," he says. "Even if there had been a way to refresh Sheen's Charlie Harper character, who was veering perilously close to 'one old joke' status, Sheen did not appear to be up to the task. He looked too drawn to be the energetic, magnetic Goodtime Charlie the role required … What fans have to hope (Ashton) Kutcher brings to the mix, aside from a new character, is a new energy and a better balance."
