"Up All Night" has potential, but it needs to get over its Maya Rudolph revamp
After the success of "Bridesmaids," NBC beefed up Rudolph's role on the show, transforming her from a publicist to a talk show diva. The new version, says Matthew Gilbert, is "just not as charming as the original. Rudolph, he says, "was believable as a morally ditzy publicist who was Reagan’s friend, the devil on her shoulder always trying to get her to go out partying; she's merely a spoof as an over-indulged TV star. Her new character brings a wackier element to the show, which undermines the fine authenticity that (creator Emily) Spivey initially set up."
The first great baby sitcom? // It needs to get over its fear of offending
The comedy is tolerable and occasionally "LOL"
It's hard watching Will Arnett and Christina Applegate act naturally

"Free Agents": NBC remake feels desperate compared to edgy UK original

Despite sharing Anthony Head, "Free Agents" has lost some of what made it entertaining in the transition to American TV, says Joanne Ostrow. She writes: "There's a whiff of desperation coming off the NBC pilot, as the office family is dragged into play rather than staying put in the background. The edgier British version rightly seems to assume one obnoxious jerk, the boss, is enough for the office setting and keeps the focus on the angsty adults."
Painfully unfunny // NBC's version isn't willing to be as dark as the UK original
Promising and intriguing, "Free Agents" could grow or get old really fast
Hank Azaria reflects on his career // Anthony Stewart Head on working on both series

CW's "H8R" is beyond ridiculous

There's a big problem with the Mario Lopez celebrity revenge reality show, says Jen Chaney:
"News flash, everyone: When you sign a contract to star on one of those shows, you='re basically agreeing to potentially get your chops busted from now until the end of time. That's part of the deal. To act indignant — as Snooki does in tonight’s premiere episode after a guy named Nick Petrillo officially declares that she 'sucks' in a video that he never expected the 'Jersey Shore' star to see — is beyond ridiculous." PLUS: Mario Lopez is the Anti-Robin Hood.

He adds: "For all three Anderson Coopers, this sharing gets into a permanently tricky territory, which all TV news personalities recognize, that there are entirely personal stories they can tell about themselves, which in turn provide a warmer style of journalism and keep viewers coming back."

Sarah Michelle Gellar a bad fit for "Ringer"
On her new CW show, "Gellar seems stranded in a purposefully nonspecific part," says Matt Zoller Seitz. "I like her a lot, but when I mentally list adjectives that describe her screen persona, 'mysterious' is not among them. This role needed an actress with mystery, and danger, and heat — somebody who could suggest hidden hunger, opportunism, kinkiness and cruelty; a touch of the film noir heroine, perhaps, or the Hitchcock blonde. The series also needed a less boring lead character."
Dear CW: Don't mess up this good show // "Ringer" is so good that it's "CBS' bad"
The show is great fun, and Gellar is having fun // Vindication for Gellar
